Jaws Still Open at Burnaby Come From Behind Win at Minto
August 26, 2007
Tournaments like the Minto Cup is where great players shine, teams go the distance, and hard work is rewarded. Tonight the Burnaby Lakers took a bad start and turned it into a win; not easy by any standards, especially at this time of the season when every game could be your last.

New West was still reveling from their victory against Six Nations Arrows Express last night and came out strong in the first. Goals from David Brock, Alex Turner, Travis Cornfield, and Eric Ross put New West at a comfortable 4-1 lead at the end of the opening frame.

Jordan McBride put in a security goal just a minute into the second, then Burnaby clicked in. Dane Dobbie started his point streak of the evening when he took advantage of an Alex Turner holding penalty halfway through the period. A short handed goal from Jamie Lincoln and another power play marker from Dobbie was just what the Laker bench needed to get back in it.

Burnaby came out of the dressing room a completely different team for the third, you could sense their concentration and determination to not only tie, but win the game. Lincoln threw in a PP goal to get the ball rolling, and then managed to set up Dobbie for the tying goal shortly after.

Kyle Buchanan almost stole the game for New West with about five minutes to go, but was called for crease play, much to the chagrin of Bellie home fans.

It looked like this game was headed for OT but the tables turned when Lincoln got called for a wrap around penalty. The crowd oooh’d and aaahh’d in anticipation of a New West opportunity, but Dane Dobbie said- not tonight. “I didn’t even know if I was going to shoot it” Dobbie says, “but its do or die right now, you have to play every game like it’s your last”

That performance earned Dobbie the game MVP for Burnaby; goalie Craig Robertson earned the award for the Bellies after turning away 48 of the Lakers shots. That’s the second night in a row Robertson has faced 48 shots after he did the same last night against Six Nations. Without his goaltending the score certainly would have been a run away for Burnaby.

Final score from Queens was a thrilling 7-6 for the Lakers. Game four of the Minto Cup tourney goes down tomorrow night at 7:30 and see’s the two out of town teams in action- Six Nations, and the Edmonton Miners.

An added bonus will be the opportunity to get your picture taken with the Memorial Cup of Jr Hockey, and don’t forget the Minto and Mann Cup which will also be on display for pictures.
