In the week since the Saints have suited up for a BCJALL game it appeared the squad had done some team bonding in the form of hair dying. It was a steady stream of bright yellow tresses as the team lined up for role call in Bill Copeland on Sunday night for game one of the quarter final series with the Lakers.
The Saints would start game one with some penalty trouble being called for holding and high sticking, which made things easier for Burnaby to get ahead thanks to a power play goal from Brock Armour.
Both teams seemed to have their own troubles following them around. For Poco, it was shots on target in the first; with eight minutes left in the period they had only one shot that made Tom Wray move. For Burnaby it was targeted passing, players were having to fully extend or chase passes coming their way when they were attacking.
The period would end with a two nothing lead for Burnaby, and the second would be more like the two teams who played the regular season.
Five goals from Burnaby and four from the Saints- including two impressive goals from Trevor Evans- would give the middle frame more pace and intensity.
Adding to that intensity was Robert Kraakman and Alex Gajic; while Gajic was advancing the ball past center, Kraakman was coming off the bench and decided to make his presence felt by checking Gajic from behind. Gajic went to the dressing room immediately, with a hard limp.
Gajic would return in the third after about a 15 minute break to compose himself, but definitely was a little slower on the floor.
There wasn't much action in the final frame but another goal from Cam Apples would be the final nail for Poco. The Saints would try the six man attack with four minutes left but nothing became of it. Tyson Cornfield did a great job in net for the last couple of minutes of the game; definitely getting a work out running back and forth from the bench to the net, making two huge saves while en-route,
At the end of the night game one belonged to the home team by a score of 8-4. Game two goes down Tuesday night in Poco- game time 8pm.
